STEEL CITY DIVISION

The Birmingham District Model Railroad is owned by John Stewart. This railroad represents the Birmingham Industrial District, the name given to the overall industrial district of the Birmingham area in the 1930's and 1940's.

 

The layout was built with operations in mind. It features most of the major industries in Birmingham during the 30's and 40's. This includes the Fairfiled Steel Works with two blast funaces, an open hearth complex, rolling mill and other related structures; Red Mountain and several of its iron ore mines and sintering plant; a branch line with several coal mines; coke ovens and by-products plant; the downtown "grade separation" which includes a large switching district and the L&N terminal station; at least 8 railroad interchange tracks; a pipe mill; a limestone quarry; and several rail yards to facilitate the building and movement of trains and cars around the layout.

 

HO scale: 33' x 13' room plus 12' x 14' room: walk-in around the wall layout with two peninsulas.
